Drivers have been warned to avoid the M1 near Watford while it is closed both ways due to a police incident.
Hertfordshire Police shut the motorway between junctions eight and nine by Hemel Hempstead just before 3pm this afternoon (September 11).

A spokesperson for the force has now confirmed that the road has been closed as a result of a concern for welfare.
There are currently lengthy delays for drivers, with motorists urged by police to avoid the area.
The incident is causing knock-on congestion as there is heavy traffic northbound past junction nine towards Luton and on the slip road joining the A5138.
