A teenage girl was seriously injured in a Watford hit-and-run after being struck by a van.

The collision was in Gammons Lane at the junction with Ashby Road at around 7pm on November 18, following which police appealed for witnesses the next day.

An 18-year-old from the area was crossing Gammons Lane when she was hit by a vehicle - believed to be a white transit van with ladders on the roof - which failed to stop.

The teenager was rushed to hospital by ambulance, where she remains in a serious condition.

Investigating officer Sergeant Matt O’Neill said: “We are keen to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision and who has not yet spoken to police, or anyone who has any information which could help the investigation."

At the time police closed the road and urged people to avoid the area as officers and the ambulance service worked at the scene.

Cllr Asif Khan, who represents North Watford on Hertfordshire County Council, told the Watford Observer that his thoughts are with the victim and her family.

He also urged the driver of the vehicle  to come forward, saying: "They need to contact the police straight away. A young girl has been injured here and its only right that they explain what happened so we can get justice for her."

Cllr Khan also vowed to work with the county council to make roads safer and prevent further accidents of this kind.
