Having been to all our Carling Cup games this season, I was not overly disappointed when we crashed out via penalties on Tuesday night.

The first game against Accrington Stanley was the worst I have seen in a long time, and the Hull match was far too close for my liking, after we had looked comfortable for 65 minutes. Although it is nice to get a cup run going with a potential pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, I don't believe we need the distraction. Our squad is arguably the smallest in the Premiership, and with Marlon King, Gavin Mahon and Ben Foster all missing in the defeat to Newcastle through injury, I don’t believe we need the extra games.

The League Cup has become less integral to Premiership sides over the last decade, with most clubs choosing to rest their stars, preferring to play youngsters and fringe players. Admittedly, both Newcastle and the Hornets put out strong sides on Tuesday, but Watford’s performance was well below the standard set against Middlesbrough on Saturday. Was this due to fatigue? Or perhaps the risk of getting injured for important league games crept into the player’s minds? Either way, I’m happy we can concentrate on our Premiership campaign, starting at Chelsea tomorrow.

For all those going, raise the roof and get behind the lads. With tickets as much as £48, I hope you get your money’s worth. It is a tough ask to gain something at ‘The Bridge’, but in Aidy we trust.
