An additional 50 apartments will be built on the site of the former International University in Bushey.

The revised plan alters that for hundreds of homes given planning permission in 2001, reshuffling the position of some of the site's new buildings, including a controversial electricity station and a guard house.

At a meeting of Hertsmere Borough Council's Bushey and Aldenham Planning Committee on Tuesday, councillors raised concerns with the impact new five storey buildings would have on the Aldendham Road development but unanimously agreed to give planning permission after it was suggested these buildings would stop the site looking bulky and one level.

Planning officers briefly noted the current economic situation affecting the development and occupation of the site but this did not form part of the councillors' discussions.

An already running bus shuttle service was praised and the new design was described by Councillor Brenda Batten as “a lot better than the last one”.

She did however add that the amount of flats now approved for the site was the “absolute maximum”.

The developers recently handed over a plot of land, named The Manor Field, to residents as part of the original planning agreement following a long struggle by The Bushey Residents' Action Group.
