Members of Three Rivers District Council met yesterday evening to welcome in the new political year and elect a new chairman.

Liberal Democrat councillor Richard Laval was elected to the ceremonial post, replacing out-going party colleague and friend Councillor Chris Lloyd.

Councillor Lloyd won cross-party praise for his “untiring” stint as chairman, during which he raised some £14,000 for charity. The money will go to the Croxley Green Scout Group, the Amos Trust and the Lynda Jackson Macmillan Cancer Centre.

Councillor Laval, who was first elected in 1991, will take part in his first official engagement tomorrow morning when he visits a 100-year-old lady in Chorleywood.

After joking that he much preferred dogs to children, he announced his designated charities for the year would be The Retired Greyhounds’ Trust and Water Aid.
