The organisers of the Bushey Carnival say they hope the resurrected event will be bigger and better next year.

The carnival and parade returned on Saturday after a three year break - albeit in a new, temporary, home.

The parade, which formerly trooped along Bushey High Street, has not been held for the past couple of years due to difficulties organising the event.

Instead, the event was staged at the weekend in the Lincolnsfield Centre.

Francis Mclennan, who sits on the Bushey Carnival Committee, said moving back to the High Street had proved too expensive this year.

He said: "It was something the committee looked at at the beginning but the police and Hertfordshire County Council wanted to charge something like £3,000 to close the streets.

"If we had to pay that we would have run a terminal loss, so there was simply no way we could find that.

"What we are hoping to do is to say to the police and to the council that this was, and is, an important local event and it should go through the streets. Hopefully they will be able to waive the fees for us."

After helping to resurrect the event on Saturday, Francis said: "I think people enjoyed themselves.

"For something that was organised in half the time a carnival usually takes to organise, we thought it was a very successful event."
