Primary school pupils from across Watford faced each other on the rugby pitch this afternoon during a tournament designed to introduce them to the sport.

The event, hosted by Watford Rugby Club, saw 160 boys and girls from 16 schools play each other in a round robin tag tournament before the best teams progressed to a knock-out stage.

Players from Knutsford School, in Knutsford Avenue, defeated Laurance Haines School, in Vicarage Road, in the final.

Dave Christie, youth development officer at Watford Rugby Club, in Radlett Road, organised the tournament alongside coaches from Saracens.

He said: “Saracens and Watford Rugby Club were looking to go into local schools and bring them down to a tag rugby tournament and get them into rugby.

“It was to get kids involved and get them running around and more healthy.

“The other idea was to use it as an introduction to the sport. It was a massive success and a lot of kids will be coming down on a Sunday to continue playing.”
