A family in Bushey have to look twice before they cross the doorstep due to vehicles passing inches from the front door.

Russell James, of Harbour Court, described cars and motorbikes leaving the road, and cutting across the pavement and grass verge to the side of their house in order to access the parking area, situated opposite.

He said: “People drive right across the front of our house, my children have nearly been killed on a number of occasions by motorbikes.”

The parking area is blocked off on all sides by a wooden boundary, but the area to the side of Mr James's house is open to vehicles.

Mr James, a fencer, even suggested building a fence himself in order to stop the vehicles.

PCSO Carole Bull said: "We're following up the complaint to determine who is responsible in order to see if safety measure can be put in place."

The Harbour Court estate sits opposite the Harcourt Road shops, an area which has attracted the attention of both police and the Bushey crime reduction group.

Mr James added: “We don't like calling the police because we're very vulnerable on the corner here. I'm constantly out here picking up cans and bottles from people hanging around.”

A shelter has been designed and will be situated in the nearby Moatfield Recreation Ground in order to move the group who congregate around the shops.

Anita Gamble, chairwoman of the Bushey crime reduction group, said: “The sooner the community shelter goes up the better. Hopefully it will detract the young people from hanging around outside the shops.”
