An area of Bushey had its act extensively cleaned up by a team of police, fire and council officers yesterday.

The Environmental Action Day was organised in order to address people's gripes with their streets.

Neighbourhood PCSOs Derek Spender and Carole Bull were taking part in the community event.

PCSO Bull said: “The idea is for us to get into the community, so people who previously would have had to come to the station can let us know the problems in the area.

“Then we can make sure their priorities aren't priorities for long.”

Suggestions from residents included a new bollard for the lollipop lady, a barricade to stop people driving over the grassy area of Harbour court and the resiting of a bench in Lea Close.

Valerie Kane, community safety officer for Hertsmere Borough Council, said: “We run these events regularly.

"We've handed out 200 leaflets to the local residents and later the mobile police office will be parked up here so people can come and ask questions.

“We look at grafitti in particular, but also fly tipping and vehicles without tax. Highways also look at signage and drains too.”

Several walls of grafitti were cleaned off by the council's mobile grafitti machine.

Finally between two and four the mobile police station set up outside the Harcourt shops to take suggestions from resident.
