Building work on a luxury house on the site of the old Norwegian Barn hotel in Elstree is set to be stopped by the council, because it is in breach of planning permission.

Last summer the borough council reluctantly granted permission for an eight-bedroom house to be built on the four-acre Green Belt site, in Edgwarebury Lane.

But the council has since noticed that the house that is being built there is larger than the house described in the planning application.

The planning sub-committee also decided action should be taken to remove a two-storey hut which had been erected for the builders.

This month councillors agreed that enforcement action should be taken to halt building work and ensure that the house is built according to the original plan. The same committee was reluctant to grant permission for the scheme last year, but felt it had to because a similar plan was approved for the site several years before. The owners of the premises have told the council that they wish to submit a new planning application.
