I am both a motorist and pedestrian using, in particular, the Brent Street area in Hendon and I refer to Ronald Rosenblatt's letter (Crossing query', Times Letters, August, 15).
Over a year ago I rang Barnet Council regarding these red brick crossings and was informed that they had no legal validity at all and, in particular, gave no right of way to pedestrians.
To my knowledge, they are not in the Highway Code. Worse still, they cause confusion to the pedestrians and motorists and are a potential danger.
I am not saying that legal crossings should not be available at these points but they should be zebra crossings or controlled by lights, both of which are understood by everyone and obeyed by most.
