THE Amadeus Chamber Orchestra begins the new year with a concert featuring music by Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven on Saturday, January 31.

Haydn's Symphony No 82, known as The Bear, opens the programme and is followed by Mozart's Bassoon Concerto and Beethoven's Symphony No 2.

The soloist will be Colin Beak, principal bassoonist of Amadeus. The concert takes place at St Peter's Church, St Albans, at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £7 (students and senior citizens £5) on the door or in advance from 01727 864511.

The Lea Singers will read through Poulenc's Gloria in an afternoon at St George's School Chapel, Sun Lane, Harpenden, on Sunday from 2pm. The group hopes as many people as possible will join them for the fun event and take tips from conductor and professional singer Geoffrey Davidson. Tickets, to include a buffet, cost £10 from Jim Robertson on 01582 841934.
