ONE hundred balls for use in PE classes and other lessons have been donated to Breakspeare School.

The Watford and Langleys Rotary Club, which organises the Kings Langley Carnival, paid for the equipment for the school in Abbots Langley, which teaches children with severe learning disabilities.

The number of balls given, 100, is significant because this year is the Rotary Club's centenary.

As well as balls which can be used for games, special balls with tactile surfaces, cloth balls and therapy balls were also donated.

The balls will be used by all age groups at the school, in Gallows Hill Lane, from two to 19-year-olds.

Headteacher Gill Williamson said she is delighted with the donation.

She said: "We are very pleased with the donation because we are currently working towards the healthy schools award and this will help us achieve it.

"We are always very grateful when people are so generous. We needed this equipment and we are thankful we haven't had to use the school budget to buy it."

Rotarian Martin Horsted said: "Our club is very pleased to be able to celebrate our organisation's centenary by making a donation of 100 specialised and general games balls, one for every year of the Rotary's existence, which will be widely used by children at Breakspeare School."

The school is also developing its PE provision by building a new sports hall.

Work will begin on the hall in August and is expected to be completed by next April.

The construction of the sports hall is another feather in the school's cap, following a number of successes in 2005.

At the start of July it discovered it has been named as among the most outstanding in the country in Ofsted's Annual Report.

It has also recently welcomed Russian teachers to the school, who visited to share methods and ideas.

The Watford and Langleys Rotary was established seven years ago and raises money through organising many social events, including June's Kings Langley Carnival.

The Rotary Club is a young, active group of professional and business men and women who meet regularly at Millers Kitchen, Hempstead Road, Kings Langley, for a meal and to plan and organise a wide range of community and social activities.

Prospective members are always welcome to attend the meetings with no obligation to join.
