Brentford's new manager Leroy Rosenior wasted no time in making his first two signings - striker Jo Kuffour on a free transfer from his former club Torquay United and one-time Charlton midfielder Paul Mortimer as coach.

Mortimer, who played eight times for Brentford on loan from Crystal Palace before rejoining Charlton in 1994, will share coaching duties with Scott Fitzgerald, Brentford's existing youth team coach.

Rosenior has found he also has a goalkeeping coach in reserve team keeper George Bankole, who was offered a new one-year deal by Martin Allen shortly before the previous manager's departure.

Rosenior's signing of 24-year-old Kuffour on a one-year contract and his desire to bring in two midfield players soon means he will not be keeping former Arsenal striker Isaiah Rankin or the other players released by Allen.

The 5ft 7in Kuffour has not got a big physical presence he is only 10st 3lbs but grabbed 10 goals last season.

In total he scored 31 goals in 118 appearances over four years with Torquay.

Kuffour, who had a previous loan spell with Swindon Town, and was at Arsenal as a trainee, told the Brentford website: "I enjoyed playing under Leroy at Torquay and I can't wait to work with him again he knows how to get the best out of me".

Rosenior added: "Kuffour is not an out-and-out scorer, but his scoring record is good. He is quick with good feet and can also play wide left."

Asked if Kuffour could form a lethal striking partnership with Lloyd Owusu, Rosenior replied: "We will have to see. Lloyd is still with us for another year and is working hard to get fit following last season's injury."

Owusu missed the play-off matches with Swansea last month as he tore a groin muscle in Ghana's friendly in Germany.

Rankin battled on for Brentford despite tearing a cartilage, but he now finds himself no longer wanted at Griffin Park.

The same applies to Paul Brooker, Ricky Newman, Scott Fitzgerald junior, Eddie Hutchinson, Junior Lewis and Marcus Gayle.

But Kevin O'Connor and Michael Turner are likely to be offered new contracts.

Rosenior explained: "I don't think it is a good idea to go back so I will not be contacting the players Martin Allen released. But George Bankole has accepted a one-year contract."

The new boss is now looking for a part-time fitness coach so he has replacements for both of Allen's lieutenants, coach Adrian Whitbread and sports therapist Damien Doyle, who have followed him to MK Dons.

Mortimer has held academy coaching positions at MK Dons and Arsenal, and was also on the coaching staff at Torquay during Rosenior's reign as manager.

Speaking to brentfordfc.co.uk, he said: "I used to clean Leroy's boots at Fulham back in the mid-80s and when we were both at Bristol City we lived together for two years. So we know each other well!

"I come from west London and am familiar with the Bees, having played there on loan back in 1993 under Phil Holder.

"I've been to a dozen Brentford games over the last two seasons so know all about the players here and what they can do. We're aware of we've got, and of the areas that need strengthening."

Apart from bringing in two midfielders, one of whom will replace the departing Jay Tabb, Brentford will also need a defender if, as expected, they sell Sam Sodje.

However, Oli Skulasson has recovered after being injured for all of last season.

Brentford will kick off the new League One season at home to Blackpool on Saturday, August 5, followed by trips to promoted Northampton Town (August 8) and relegated Brighton (August 12).

The Bees travel to League Two side Swindon Town in the first round of the Carling Cup on August 22 or 23.
