Politicians visited a Garston school as it hosted the final pre-election recording of BBC Radio 4's Any Questions.

Parmiter's School, in High Elms Lane, was the venue for the live broadcast, between 8pm and 8.50pm last Friday.

And among the panellists were former Liberal Democrat leader Charles Kennedy; Nicola Sturgeon, the Deputy First Minister of Scotland and Deputy Leader of the Scottish National Party; Michael Gove, the Conservative Shadow Secretary for Department For Education and Employment; and Shaun Woodward, Labour's Northern Ireland Secretary.

The programme was moderated by Jonathan Dimbleby.

Many parents, teachers and students were among the 320-strong audience as teacher Neil Doherty asked whether the parties would raise VAT and Sixth Form student Mia Jeannot questioned Conservative plans for Free Schools.

Pupils at Parmiter's are familiar with the political process after three students - Hari Raithatha, Lauren Landon and Tiffany Freedman – were elected to the UK Youth Parliament in February. They represent half the number of Hertfordshire MYPs.

Parmiter's headteacher Brian Coulshed said: “It was highly enjoyable and a never-to-be-forgotten evening at Parmiter’s.

“I was delighted to welcome many guests for their first visit to the School, including luminaries from the world of politics and the media.

“Jonathan Dimbleby was an exceptional chairman, who is perpetuating the important contributions made to our national life by his family and, in particular, his father, Richard.”

Colin Tattle, organiser of the event and Second Master at Parmiter's, added: “We were delighted to host 'Any Questions' at Parmiter's. It was a very special event for the school and involved many representatives of the whole school community including students, parents, governors and trustees and members of the Parent's Association.

“A large group of School Prefects acted as guides and hosts and had the chance to meet the production crew and panellists.”
