Watford Town Hall was awash with colour and pageantry last night as the borough council selected its ceremonial Chairman for 2010/11.

Councillor Alan Burtenshaw was formally appointed to succeed outgoing chairman, Councillor Keith Crout.

As the new incumbent of the historic post prepared to accept his robes and chain of office, Watford’s “first citizen” was warmly welcomed by his peers.

Councillor Iain Sharpe said: “He is clearly proud of Watford and has shown commitment over decades to make it a better place.”

After reading his oath of office and swearing allegiance to The Queen, Councillor Burtenshaw declared his election “a great privilege and an honour.”

The popular council veteran said he would dedicate his year in office to “Watford’s Wonderful Volunteers”, the people who give their time to help others.

He will raise money for the Sea Lions Swimming Club (a swimming charity for the disabled) and the New Hope Trust.

Councillor Burtenshaw added: “I hope when I stand here in one year’s time Watford will be a better place to live.”
