More than 30 volunteers braved the cold and wind in Chorleywood on Saturday morning as they gave their support to the village’s community orchard and celebrated the unveiling of two new benches.
The orchard, first planted in 2009 in the grounds of the Chorleywood House Estate, saw its 100th tree planted this morning, as volunteers young and old dirtied their hands in the name of community spirit.
It also welcomed the unveiling of two new wooden benches, purchased with £1,200 of community grant funding by County Councillor Chris Hayward.
He said: “This kind of scheme is what the Big Society is all about; people giving up their time to make a difference to the community. I think this is an absolutely wonderful scheme and I was delighted to provide these new benches.”
Alison Rubens, orchard chairman, said: “Ever since we planted the first trees the orchard has been really popular. I think people like the idea of doing something for the benefit of everybody; something for future generations.
