Eager bargain hunters stripped the shelves bare as Watford’s TJ Hughes closed its doors for the last time.

Customers left little in their wake as they made the most of the Liverpool-based retailer’s ongoing financial woes yesterday afternoon.

The shop, in The Parade, is one of dozens across the country that has now ceased trading.

The decision to close, taken by administrators, brings to an end more than a century of retail tradition in the building, which was formerly occupied by Clements.

Former TJ Hughes employee Harriette-Rose Malone said: “Having worked there as a shop assistant a few years ago, it was extremely strange to see the shop so empty.

“Speaking to many of the staff there it was a very sad day for the team.”

Speculation will mount as to the building’s future. Its owners, a major insurance firm, may consider selling it for redevelopment if new commercial tenants can’t be found.

If that happens, Watford Borough Council will be obliged to bare in mind the building’s locally listed façade when considering any applications.
