Children in Croxley Green are taking part in a national scheme promoting walking to school.

Pupils at Yorke Mead Primary School, in Dulwich Way, have ditched their normal route to school by car or bus to take part in International Walk to School Month.

The National Walk to School campaign, which is now in its eleventh year, invites thousands of children from across the UK and 40 countries worldwide to celebrate the benefits of walking to school.

Liz Pollard, headteacher at Yorke Mead Primary School, said: “We always encourage children to walk to school in a safe and sensible fashion where possible.

“By increasing physical activity every day children and families will reap the benefits of walking to school, reducing congestion outside schools and having the opportunity to burn off some energy before learning begins.”

With the nights and mornings getting darker, property developer Barratt Homes has donated 40 high-visibility vests for the children to wear.

Brendon O’Neill, managing director for Barratt North London, said: “Not only does the campaign encourage children to get more exercise by walking to school but it helps relieve congestion outside schools and help reduce pollution.”
