The chairman of the governors of West Herts College, Declan O’Farrell CBE, stepped down this week and was given a fitting send off in the college’s training restaurant.

During his eight years as chairman of the governing body Mr O’Farrell has steered the college through one of the most successful periods in its history.

It culminated in the college achieving a rating of "Outstanding" from Ofsted and the opening of the new campus in Hempstead Road.

The college also opened its Kings Langley campus, which specialises in motor vehicle, plumbing and electrical installation, during Mr O’Farrell’s tenure.

Speaking after his final Board of Governors meeting, Mr O’Farrell said: "I have found my time working with the college thoroughly rewarding.

"When I was appointed to the Governing Body in January 2004 the challenge was to take the college forward for the people Watford and the surrounding communities it serves. It is now better placed to do so than ever before.

“The Ofsted accolade is proof of the quality of the teaching here today.

"Going forward, it’s equally significant that the college’s financial foundations are solid and that its estate features two new sites including the flagship campus in Watford town centre.

“Many people have played a part in this success story and I would like to acknowledge the considerable contribution of the many governors I have had the privilege of working with over the past eight years.”

West Herts College Principal Gill Worgan said: “The college has been fortunate to have someone of Declan’s expertise heading up the governing body. He has overseen a period of great success for the college. And been instrumental in our transformation to a college known for its commitment to high quality education.”

Mr O’Farrell CBE was appointed to the West Herts College Corporation, as Chair of Governors, in January 2004.

He has experience in senior corporate and financial management, including holding the position of chief executive of a bus company and a website development company, and previous chairmanship positions, including Business Link (London), NW London TEC and Harrow FE College.

He is currently also chairman of Hertfordshire Community Health Services.

A new chair of governors at West Herts College will be appointed in the coming weeks and in post from January 1 2012.
