A decision on the controversial plans for a rail freight terminal near Radlett, which was expected next week, has been delayed until June.

The Secretary of State is postponing his response to the court decision on the Helioslough appeal. This is because there may be implications following the new National Planning Policy Framework, which was introduced earlier this week.

Helioslough wants to build a depot on the former Radlett Airfield site.

Interested parties who gave evidence to the inquiry have now been asked to present their views on how they think the new framework changes things.

Sandy Walkington, a campaigner for the Liberal Democrats in St Albans who has been involved in the campaign against the 3.5 million square-metre depot, hopes the delay will be a last chance to block the plans.

He said: "We know perfectly well that people in St Albans don’t want it.

"It was a bit of a surprise – now we have just got to go flat out.

"Any delay is good news – we’re got to be grateful for any opportunity."

Politicians, residents and campaigners from the district have been fighting a long battle against the rail freight for several years.

The decision, which was originally expected on April 5, is now expected on or before June 13.

More to follow.
