Watford head coach believes Odion Ighalo is the perfect example for his Watford teammates of what can be achieved with hard work and says he wants his players to show he makes mistakes when picking the Hornets side.

Since arriving at the club Slavisa Jokanovic has shown he isn’t afraid of making big decisions if he believes it is in the best interest of the team.

Jokanovic has stopped Keith Andrews, Lloyd Dyer, Lewis McGugan, Diego Fabbrini and Mathias Ranegie training with the first team for differing reasons in the past two months and has stressed several times that he wants a stronger team ethic.

Jokanovic used Ighalo as an example of what can be achieved if a player works hard.

The striker, who joined Watford from Granada in the summer, had to wait almost two months for his first league start but has proved his worth in the past month with eight goals in four matches.

Speaking last week, Jokanovic said: “No I don’t believe Ighalo is an example to the other strikers – he is a good example for the whole team.

“It is a case of working and waiting because I can be wrong, I can make mistakes. My job is to make fewer mistakes and if you are insistent and you show me ‘coach, I am the best option for you’ then soon I will observe this.

“If you complain and you’re not happy with my decision then this is not the way to show me that I have made a mistake. If you do that I won’t be shown that I have made a mistake.”

Ighalo struck four times in Watford’s 7-2 thrashing of Blackpool on Saturday. And after that game Jokanovic’s praised the Nigerian’s professionalism.

He said: “He is a quality player who works very hard. Since I arrived sometimes I use him or sometimes I don’t.

“However I use him, whether it is ten minutes, bringing him on at half time or starting him he always works like a professional, an adult man.”
