Watford are close to sealing their tenth signing of the summer after Dutch side AZ Alkmaar revealed they have come to a verbal agreement with Watford over the transfer of winger Steven Berghuis.

The Hornets have been in negotiations with AZ for more than a week and have finally agreed a deal for the 23-year-old.

Berghuis left AZ’s training camp this afternoon and we understand he will arrive at Watford tomorrow to undergo a medical and agree personal terms.

His signing brings the number of Hornets additions this summer to ten. The previous arrivals are Giedrius Arlauskis, Allan Nyom, Sebastian Prodl, Miguel Britos, Jose Holebas, Valon Behrami, Etienne Capoue, Matej Vydra, Jose Manuel Jurado.

Berghuis began his career at FC Twente but made just 16 appearances for the club either side of a loan spell at VVV-Venlo.

He joined Alkmaar in 2012 for a reported fee of £400,000 and went on to make 27 appearances during the 2012/2013 season. However, only ten of those were starts.

The following campaign proved much more productive for Berghuis. He played 41 times for AZ and netted ten times.

The previous season was Berghuis’s most prolific and his form alerted several sides in Europe, as well as the Hornets.

Watford are also interested in midfielder Lex Immers, who made 40 appearances for Feyenoord last season.
