Watford were held to a controversial 1-1 draw by Tottenham Hotspur in a feisty Premier League clash at Vicarage Road.

The hosts went ahead through Christian Kabasele’s header before Son Heung-Min hit back for Spurs.

Watford were given a numerical advantage when Davinson Sanchez was rightly shown a red card for an elbow on Richarlison.

Marco Silva’s men pushed for a winner and were unfortunate to see Abdoulaye Doucoure’s effort from distance hit the post.

They should have been given a stoppage-time penalty for a handball by Eric Dier, but ultimately had to settle for a point.

Here’s how the Hornets rated against Spurs.

Heurelho Gomes – 6.5

Had no chance with the Spurs goal and dealt with everything else the visitors could offer. A routine day at the office for the Brazilian.

Adrian Mariappa – 7

Watford Observer:

Bounced back well from a tough evening against Manchester United on Tuesday night and was part of a solid defensive display.

Watford repeatedly caught Spurs offside and Mariappa played an important role in keeping the back line regimented.

Sebastian Prodl – 7

Like Mariappa, Prodl was also in need of a confidence boosting display after the defeat to United and got exactly that as he put in a committed, composed performance.

Christian Kabasele – 6.5

Gave the home side the lead with a well-taken header from Cleverley’s corner for his second goal of the season. The strike lifted Watford, but Kabasele was sloppy at other points in the game.

Booked and it was little surprise to see him subbed as he walked a disciplinary tight-rope at times.

Kiko Femenia – 6

Tried to get forward as much as possible, but lacked his usual incisive impact in attack. Solid defensively.

Abdoulaye Doucoure – 7.5

Grew into the game as the match wore on and disrupted Spurs’ midfield. Kept Watford on the front foot after Sanchez’s dismissal.

The Frenchman was hugely unlucky to see a fine curling effort cannon back off the post for what would have been the winner.

Tom Cleverley – 7.5

Watford Observer:

Set the temp for Watford in the first half and was the most productive of Watford’s players in the first half. His corner created the Watford opener and his delivery from set pieces was dangerous throughout.

Marvin Zeegelaar – 5

A testing afternoon for the Dutch defender and he was defensively suspect. Spurs repeatedly got space on the right wing and Zeegelaar struggled.

Richarlison – 6.5

Watford Observer:

Watford’s most frequently available attacking outlet and should have won a penalty when his cross his Dier’s outstretched arm. Drew the foul which led to Sanchez’s red card.

Roberto Pereyra – 5

Anonymous for much of the match and struggled to exert any influence on proceedings. Unsurprising to see him make way in the second half.

Troy Deeney – 6.5

Watford look a different prospect with their captain in the side and his hold up play gave the Hornets a genuine attacking outlet.

Will be interesting to see if Marco Silva sticks with Deeney ahead of Andre Gray going forward.

SUBS

Etienne Capoue – 6

Playing against his old side, Capoue upped the tempo and played some fine passes during his half-hour on the pitch. Had a long shot easily saved.

Andre Carrillo – 5.5

Provided more going forward than Pererya but end product was found to be lacking.

Andre Gray – N/A

Not given long enough to impress.
