Let's not get ahead of ourselves, Watford's win over Leicester City yesterday was impressive for the character the side showed, but there were still some troubling moments for Marco Silva's side.

Had Jamie Vardy finished off a one-on-one which was more meat and drink than his Christmas roast, it would have put the game out of sight before Molla Wague had a chance to stab home an equaliser from a corner.

The Hornets just about deserved victory, for me, but sometimes you have to be lucky, too, and the key moments generally went the way of the Hornets.

There were some up-and-down performances throughout and our match ratings would have looked mighty difference at half-time, but it's amazing what a bit of confidence can do to a side.

Here's how the Hornets shaped up:

Heurelho Gomes - 8
More than made up for his error at Brighton with a couple of match-winning saves late on. Would score higher, but everything he had to do until that point was largely routine, although he did it well.

Daryl Janmaat - 5.5
Skinned too many times and looked so nervous before the break. A better proposition going forward after half-time, but still likely to be playing second fiddle to Kiko Femenia when he returns.

Molla Wague - 8
What kind of striker would you want to face to clear away the rust of your first minutes in three months? That's right, the Usain Bolt of the Premier League. Wague coped superbly well with him, showcased by one crucial interception when Marc Albrighton played a ball over the top. And that's before you mention the goal.

Watford Observer:

Christian Kabasele - 7.5
Not quite up to his team-mate in the first half, and played Vardy onside for that one-on-one when he failed to step up in time. Looked the better of the pairing after the interval and more like himself, which he hasn't in the past few games.

Marvin Zeegelaar - 5.5
Another, like Janmaat, who improved after the break, but in the first half he was all at sea. Beaten with ease by Shinji Okazaki and then Riyad Mahrez, for the goal, both in the air. Still to be convinced he can live up to the West Ham and Newcastle performances on a regular basis.

Abdoulaye Doucoure - 6.5
Put in his worst performance in a Watford shirt before his goal. His famous chant was in danger of sounding like an ironic dig given how bad his passing radar was in the first half, but has a goalscorer's knack of popping up in the right place, even if Kasper Schmeichel has taken that one off of him.

Watford Observer:

Ben Watson - 7
Some nice passing and tidy play in and out of possession from a man who has played precious little football in the past two years, but used his fresh legs to good effect, especially chasing down a Leicester counter to produce a vital interception after the break. Perhaps a sign that, were half his squad not sidelined by injuries, there would have been more rotation from Marco Silva.

Andre Carrillo - 8
Possibly his brightest performance in a Watford shirt, but even in the recent poor run his displays against Huddersfield and Brighton were also encouraging. Perhaps we are close to seeing the best of the Peruvian, but goals and assists must follow.

Watford Observer:

Tom Cleverley - 7.5
Grew into the number 10 role after a quiet start, and did a better job of playing between the lines as the game wore on. Excellent after half-time.

Roberto Pereyra - 5.5
Pretty quiet and apparently carrying another knock. More than a year without 90 minutes completed now. Will we ever see the promise which he showed at Juventus, and persuaded the Hornets to make him their record signing? It's looking doubtful.

Richarlison - 6.5
Busy, but looks short on confidence. If he took that Carrillo pass first-time he'd have scored, but he was very unlucky from his next chance just before the break. Looked better once Okaka came on and he reverted to the left.

SUBSTITUTES

Stefano Okaka (for Pereyra, 44) - 6.5
Held the ball up well and was his normal self. Didn't see much action inside the box with few chances at either end after half-time.

Sebastian Prodl (for Watson, 87) - N/A

Andre Gray (for Carrillo, 90) - N/A
