Portugal holds victorious memories for Matt Wallace – and more could be made if he can build on his strong start to his opening round in Vilamoura today.

The Moor Park professional gained his European Tour card by winning the Open de Portugal in May 2017 and the 28-year-old again sits atop the leaderboard at a tournament in the country after shooting an opening round of 64 at the Portugal Masters.

Having started his campaign from the tenth, an eagle three at the par five 12th set Wallace on his way and he was to make five more birdies en route to a seven-under-par round that sees him share the lead with Eddie Pepperell at the time of writing as he bids to claim a fourth title this year.

Fellow Moor Park professional Callum Shinkwin opened up with a two-under 69 at Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course and is in a share of 44th currently.
