Another couple of games have gone by and we’ve managed to add 10 goals to our tally in two good wins away to Portsmouth (4-2) and at home to Gillingham (6-2). Something that stands out with those two results is the seven different goal scorers that have contributed.

It is important in any team to have goals coming from all over the pitch but also from those who come off the bench, it shows the strength in depth that we have and knowing you have that fire power waiting to come on is excellent for the confidence of the players and staff.

I am a little concerned that we are still shipping goals. We are yet to keep a clean sheet this season and it is something I think we need to rectify. We are getting away with it at the moment, but I fear that if and when we are faced with a tougher opposition who is fighting us for top spot, we may not have the chance to recover from being a goal or two down. It’s brilliant that we have it in us, but it is a dangerous game to rely on it.

I am confident, however, that it is something we will get better at as we play more games together and everyone knows the strengths and weaknesses of everyone else inside out. That will allow us to work even better as a group and help one another when it is necessary. The experience is also growing with each game which will only help in the long run.

We have a tough away trip in midweek to contend with as we head around the M25 to face C&K Basildon. They are at the bottom of the table as I write but we all know that it doesn’t mean a lot if you don’t turn up with the right attitude and preparation. After that fixture we have a little break from games. It is frustrating to have gaps during a season but it will give us more time on the training pitch to work on our shape and game plan and lead us into the next period of games that could well be crucial to where we finish this season.

We are top of the table at the moment, but we have played a game more than our rivals. Coventry and Chichester are hot on our heels and we will have faced them both by the end of November. Those are the games that will show us where we are really at and it is important that we keep the momentum going and go into those games full of confidence and still right up there keeping pace. We want to get there and stay there. Playing catch-up is hard, I want us to put the pressure on the other teams and know that we have done all we can to put ourselves in as strong a position as possible.
