Roberto Pereyra marked his international return with a goal as Argentina continued their recovery from a disappointing World Cup campaign with a convincing 4-0 friendly victory over Iraq in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Watford player, who has been called up by his country for the first time in almost three years, netted the second goal in the 53rd minute after being set up by Paulo Dybala.

Caretaker head coach Lionel Scaloni had already led Argentina to a friendly victory over Guatemala and draw with Colombia, and in the friendly Super Clasico tournament that also involves Saudi Arabia and long-term rivals Brazil, he oversaw another encouraging performance.

In the absence of Lionel Messi - still to confirm if he will continue playing for his country - Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria, goals from debutants Lautaro Martinez and German Pezzella, as well as Pereyra and Franco Cervi demonstrated their dominance.

After Martinez had opened the scoring in the 18th minute, Dybala had just threatened to double their lead when, in the 53rd minute, he created a chance for Pereyra. After beating two defenders he found the Hornets player, who then routinely finished into the bottom corner.

Pezzella and Cervi completed the scoring for Argentina, who face Brazil on Tuesday, in the 83rd minute and stoppage time respectively.

Elsewhere, Ben Wilmot was an unused substitute as England Under-20s beat their Italian counterparts 2-1 in a friendly.

The Hornets youngster had initially been invited to train with Paul Simpson's squad, but he was promoted to the bench for the game at AFC Fylde.

First-half goals from Arsenal duo Edward Nketiah and Joe Willock, who converted the penalty, were enough for the hosts, who saw their lead halved after the break.

Another Watford teenager, Domingos Quina, captained Portugal Under-20 as they were held to a 1-1 friendly draw by Switzerland.

Hornets loanee Juan Camilo Hernandez was not involved as Colombia beat USA 4-2 in a friendly.

The 19-year-old, known as Cucho, has been called up to the senior squad for the first time and will now be hoping to win his first cap against Costa Rica on Tuesday.
