A proud Nathaniel Chalobah was left struggling for words when asked to describe the emotions of making his senior England debut.

Chalobah came on in second half stoppage-time of the Three Lions’ impressive 3-2 win over 2010 World Cup winners Spain on Monday night.

Having made 97 appearances for England’s various junior sides, it is fair to say Chalobah’s senior bow has been a long time in the making and one he reflects on with huge pride.

“I can’t put it into words to be honest, I really can’t. It has been a long journey and one which I am very proud of,” he told Sky Sports.

“All I can do is say a big thank you to everyone who has supported me, my family and everyone else. It is a proud moment for me and I am lost for words.”

England’s performance in Seville was one to provide further optimism for a bright future as a side with an average age of just over 23 caught their hosts off guard.

A blistering display of counter-attacking football allowed Gareth Southgate’s side to race to a 3-0 lead at the break thanks to a Raheem Sterling brace and Marcus Rashford effort.

Spain battled back through Paco Alcacer and Sergio Ramos goals but England held on for an impressive UEFA Nations League win.

For Chalobah, picking up his first cap in such a match came as a bonus on a day which was already memorable.

“It was fantastic today to get the result obviously and we did very well and deserved the win. For me it is a very, very special moment,” the 23-year-old said.

“To come into a game like this is something that you dream about as a kid. Spain are a top side and for us it is a good day and very proud day.”
