Javi Gracia insists Watford will not make the same mistakes which saw him handed the biggest defeat of his Watford tenure by Liverpool last season.

Watford’s last meeting with Liverpool ended in abject disappointment as an inspired Mo Salah scored four times in a 5-0 rout at Anfield in March.

The Hornets, who host the Reds today, played three at the back during that loss, but Gracia believes a change of tact plus the advantage of playing at home can ensure they avoid a similar disappointment.

“In the last game we played with three at the back and it wasn’t a good game. We need to change something it is clear, but it doesn’t only depend on the defensive line. We need to adjust different things to get a better result,” he said.

“You always learn different things and not only after the last Liverpool game. It was a different game and I am sure playing at home, with our fans, it will be a different game.”

The Hornets have largely relied on a two man central midfield this season, with Etienne Capoue and Abdoulaye Doucoure impressing in the centre of the park.

With Liverpool tending to favour a three man midfield, Gracia could be forced to add more bodies in the centre of the park, but kept his cards close to his chest.

He said: “We will see what we do. In this case Liverpool play 4-3-3 usually but I prefer to hide my line up and formation until the end.”
