Adrian Mariappa joined a select group in Wednesday's frenetic 3-3 draw at Bournemouth when he became the 25th player to make his 300th Watford appearance in the club’s history.

The popular defender has achieved the feat across two spells, having come up through the Hornets ranks to make his debut in a 3-1 Carling Cup victory over Notts County in 2005.

Another 246 appearances followed in the next seven years before the Harrow-born player moved to Reading in the summer of 2012 after being crowned Watford’s Player of the Season.

The 32-year-old made an unexpected return to Vicarage Road in August 2016 following three seasons have at Crystal Palace and has proved a valuable member of the squad, making 48 Premier League appearances to date in his second Hornets spell.

Reflecting on the achievement, Mariappa told the club website: “I’m delighted. It’s a massive honour for me to reach such a milestone.

“I’ve got loads of people to thank for that over the years, giving me the opportunity to play and to get there because that’s something that’s very hard to do.”
