It was an occasion that deserved a better match.

Vicarage Road rose as one and held their scarves aloft in memory of Graham Taylor as the players made their way on to the pitch and a minute's applause was then held in tribute to another Watford great, Duncan Welbourne, who died at the start of this week. What followed was less memorable.

The game would have been different had Gerard Deulofeu been able to capitalise on an early one-on-one opportunity against Tom Heaton, or Ken Sema not seen another chance cleared off the line.

Having been unable to make the early breakthrough though, Watford increasingly struggled against Burnley's physical and direct approach and were fortunate not to be behind before Troy Deeney was denied by Heaton at the end of the first half.

The Clarets retained the upper hand after the break; the introduction of Issac Success saw the Hornets have a period in the ascendency, but a succession of injuries and fouls saw a largely drab encounter peter out into even more of a messy and disjointed conclusion until Chris Wood was denied a late winner for the visitors by an offside decision.

Here are a selection of images from a day when the Hornets honoured two legends.
