SCOTLAND may never have been the greatest football team in the world, but the one thing we always used to have was a bit of fight, passion, and pride in our jersey.
Unfortunately, I saw none of those things as we went down so tamely to Kazakhstan on Thursday.
I felt for Alex McLeish because when I saw the line-up I thought he had called it right. There was a lot of young players in there of course, but there was exciting, talented and in-form players throughout the team. For some reason on the day though, they just never got going at all, and as much as it pains me to say it, we looked like the team who were 117th in the world.
It ranks up there with any of the shockers we have had throughout the years, there is no sugar-coating it. It could well be one of the worst results we’ve ever had.
For all that we were woeful though, I have heard people say that players didn’t look as if they wanted to be there. What nonsense. This is playing for your country that we’re talking about. But a lot of those players let themselves down with their performance.
With the likes of Andy Robertson and Ryan Fraser to come back in, we should be in better nick for the game against San Marino on Sunday. I fancy that Alex would have rung the changes in any case, because if you get a chance to represent your country and turn in a performance like many of those players did on Thursday, you would be very fortunate to get a second chance.
There are a lot of games to go in this group, but Scotland can’t afford any more slip-ups, especially against the lowest ranked team in the world this weekend.
