Four years ago today, Watford achieved promotion to the Premier League following an eight year absence, with a win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

Dramatic finishes to games elsewhere in the Championship that day meant that the Hornets climbed into top spot, four points ahead of the playoff places, with just one game left to play.

Goals from Troy Deeney and Matej Vydra ensured that the Hornets won 2-0 in their lunchtime kick-off at the Amex Stadium, before promotion rivals Middlesbrough and Norwich both dropped points later in the day.

Deeney scored his 21st goal of the season to put the Hornets ahead, while Vydra finished a counter-attack to add a second goal late on.

Norwich had been leading Rotherham until four minutes from time, when Jordan Bowery's header brought the Millers level.

Meanwhile, third place Middlesbrough were drawing 3-3 in stoppage time at Fulham and decided to send keeper Dimi Konstantopoulos forward seeking a winner, only for the Cottagers to break to the other end and score, a decision boss Aitor Karanka defended as a legitimate "risk" afterwards.

After finding out the news Deeney spoke to radio station TalkSport about the days' events and how emotional he was after achieving promotion.

He said:“You know how it is at the back of the bus, we were just playing music and some of the lads were playing cards. We weren’t really looking at the results, more just the media stuff on TV.

“But then literally as we were pulling in to the training ground all the results came on and you can imagine it all went a bit mental after that.

“It was definitely emotional. I haven’t cried since my old man died but I was definitely crying today.”
