A petition has been launched by Watford fans to bring back Z-Cars as the pre-match music at Vicarage Road.

The theme from the police drama series had been used as the Hornets' entrance music since 1964, but was recently replaced by Sir Elton John's I'm Still Standing.

However, a number of supporters are unhappy with the change, which has coincided with a downturn in Watford's home form, and close to 300 people have signed in favour of reverting back to Z-Cars.

Paul Green, who started the petition on online petition site Change.org, wrote: "Since around 1964, the use of the TV series theme song to BBC’s Z-Cars, has been used as the “run-out” music at Watford Football Club, as the two teams emerge from the players tunnel and onto the Vicarage Road Stadiums pitch.

"The decision by Watford Football Club to replace said Z-Cars theme with “I’m Still Standing by Elton John, is seen by most Watford Supporters as a mistake , and should be stopped, and Z-Cars returned to it’s rightful position prior to Kick-Off."

Some of those who signed the petition argued that they felt it was wrong to change the club's tradition, while others suggested it was directly responsible for the Hornets' recent winless streak at Vicarage Road.

One said: "I’m all for change & keeping things fresh & updated. There is something to be said for tradition. The swelling of pride & emotion I get & see on others as Z Cars starts isn’t matched by I’m Still Standing & I’m a massive Elton Fan! Please change it back."

Another wrote: "Z Cars gives me that spine tingling feeling... I'm sure all Watford fans appreciate all SEJ has done for the club but we don't need to change our tune. Performances suffer without it."
