Matt Wallace has risen to a career-high 25th in the world after securing his best result at a major by finishing in a tie for third at the US PGA Championship.

The Moor Park honorary member followed up scores of 69, 67 and 70 with a two-over-par final round of 72 at Bethpage Black to finish on two-under-par alongside Jordan Spieth and Patrick Cantlay, six shots behind Brooks Koekpa who defended the title after a dramatic Sunday in New York.

Wallace flew to America having finished second at the British Masters and following an excellent week at one of the toughest tests in the sport he is now looking to do even better at next month’s US Open.

The 29-year-old said: “In the end, I wanted second, but I would have taken third. That’s not a bad week for me.

“I really dug deep and showed another side to myself, that I was proud and kept churning away and trying to produce the best I could, and two over was the best I could have done.

“That’s what you need to do in majors. So I’ve done it now and hope I can go two steps better in a few weeks’ time.”

The result means Wallace has jumped six places in the Official World Golf Ranking, moving him above players including Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter and leaving him directly behind Phil Mickelson.

It also boosted the Hillingdon-born golfer’s prospects in the race to be European number one and he now sits second in the Race to Dubai standings.

Koepka battled through a nerve-wracking final round to claim a remarkable fourth major in his last eight starts, eventually prevailing by two shots over Dustin Johnson having gone into the last 18 holes with a tournament record seven-shot advantage.
