Watford have opened talks with PSV Eindhoven about the possible transfer of Steven Bergwijn after Crystal Palace entered the race to sign Ismaila Sarr.

Palace have made an offer for the Senegalese winger and Rennes president Olivier Letang is willing to wait to see who will offer the highest fee.

The Watford Observer has been told both that Letang wants more money from the Hornets for Sarr than has been offered and that Watford have begun talks with PSV regarding the possible sale of Bergwijn. It is thought to be unlikely that both will sign.

As of yesterday, Watford were in the driving seat to sign Sarr and, with no other serious interest it looked like the clubs were close to reaching an agreement.

However, Palace's involvement will now make it more difficult for the Hornets to reach a deal with Rennes.

Sarr is still thought to be the Hornets' main target, but they are now looking at possible alternatives in case a deal cannot be reached with the French side that suits their terms.

A move for Bergwijn is made more complicated by the fact the Dutch international is currently with PSV as they prepare for a Europa League qualification match against Haugesund in Norway this evening.
