Javi Gracia wants Watford to use the Carabao Cup game against Coventry City on Tuesday evening to gain some much needed confidence after their defeat to West Ham.

The Hornets sit bottom of the Premier League and remain the only side yet to pick up any points, after fellow strugglers Newcastle United beat Tottenham on Sunday.

The Magpies are Watford's next opponents in the league and Gracia wants his side to be feeling better about themselves before what could turn out to be a vitally important game on Tyneside.

“Every game is a good chance in this moment for us to do better and to feel better, with more confidence," he said.

"But we’ll decide what is best because there are some players injured, fit or not fit but with the target to try to win, to try to play well because we need it."

One player who could be in line to play against the Sky Blues in the cup is Daryl Janmaat, who is yet to feature for Gracia so far this season.

The Dutch full-back was all-but ready to come on against West Ham before the visitors scored their second of the game and Gracia changed his mind.

“It was an option in that moment. I though Daryl could give us a solution to defend better on the left flank," the head coach explained.

"(Michail) Antonio was fresh. We tried to be stronger in that part but after conceding the goal I think other decisions were better.”

Gracia knows how important this week could turn out to be and is focused on producing better performances, with the side currently on their worst losing streak since 1999.

The Spaniard said he needs his players to be less anxious in difficult periods of the game and to perform to a higher standard in all areas of the pitch.

"We had 23 shots and we only put three on target," he said.

"We need to improve and be more precise and more clinical. But we need to defend better from set pieces and in all different phases of play we need to improve.

"It’s true when you are losing a game 0-1 or 1-2 there are moments when the anxiety doesn’t help us to play better, we try to score, we don’t have a good balance and we concede another goal. It’s difficult to change that dynamic but we need to do it."
