Javi Gracia wants to help Danny Welbeck return to his top form, after the new Watford signing played his first full game for the club against Coventry City on Tuesday evening.

The match was the striker's first full game since he helped Arsenal beat Qarabag 3-0 in October last year.

However, Gracia knows the England international needs time to return to his best, as do some of his other players.

"He needs to compete and he needs to play," said Gracia.

"Maybe in my opinion he's not in his best condition yet, he needs time.

"It's the same for Pereyra, Sarr and other players. They need time to improve and the best way is not only training, but playing as well, if we have these chances, or opportunities we have to do it.

"We played on Saturday and all my players are trying to compete in different competitions. We did it last season as well and if they deserve, they will have the chance to play.

"We have the EFL Cup, we have the FA Cup and the Premier League as well. All my squad is ready to do it and do it well like today. They deserve this reward."

The performances of some of his squad members against Coventry City may well have given the head coach a tough choice to make ahead of this weekend's game against Newcastle.

In particular, right-back Daryl Janmaat excelled in defence, while also contributing to the attack.

Gracia admits he has to think hard about some of his selections.

"I try to do it properly and know that some of them are in a better moment than others," he said.

"It's something they have to show me in days like today and all training sessions. What I know is they are ready because they're good professionals who train good every day.

"We need something like today, getting a good result to change a little bit the dynamic and to feel better.

"All of them are always in my mind, I have to choose. I can only play 11. I know Daryl is playing well, not only today but from the first day in pre-season, he's working really well in his position.

"There's other players like Kiko, he's playing well, Foulquier as well.

"I have many players to choose in some positions, but all the players are in a good moment."
