Matt Wallace goes into this week’s BMW PGA Championship in good heart after securing his fifth top-three finish of the year at the KLM Open, a tournament that also saw Callum Shinkwin boost his prospects of regaining his European Tour card.

Moor Park Golf Club honorary member Wallace finished in third place in Amsterdam on 15-under-par, three shots behind champion Sergio Garcia.

The Rickmansworth club’s professional, meanwhile, was two shots further back in fifth place on 13-under.

It was a case of mixed feelings for Shinkwin, who had been seeking his maiden European Tour triumph after going into the final day in a share of the lead with Garcia after rounds of 66, 69 and 66.

Although the Watford-born golfer’s title challenge ultimately ended on the back nine as he finished with a two-over closing round of 74, the 26-year-old’s best result in two years moved him up to 106th in the Race to Dubai standings. The top 110 at the end of the season will qualify for full European Tour membership.

Wallace’s concerns are at the top end of the European Tour standings after moving back up a place to fourth following his latest strong tournament showing.

The Hillingdon-born player’s week had started disappointingly with a three-over 75, but he safely made the cut with a second-round 67 and then fired a superb course-record 63 to put himself firmly in the mix going into the final 18 holes.

The world number 26 will now be seeking another good week at Wentworth in the fourth of the prestigious Rolex Series events on the European Tour calendar and will partner fellow Englishmen Tommy Fleetwood and Eddie Pepperell in the first two rounds.
