Watford's out-on-loan defender Ben Wilmot was left to watch from the bench as England Under-21s beat Austria 5-1 in a European Championship qualifier last night.

The youngster, who is currently on loan with Swansea City, made his debut for the U21s last week, when he played the second-half of a friendly against Slovenia.

The 19-year-old went close to marking his first appearance in style just past the 70-minute mark when he headed against the post.

He was given no such opportunity against Austria, however, as the young Lions comprehensively won at Stadium MK.

A brace for Callum Hudson-Odoi, an own goal from Marco Friedl and an Eddie Nketiah strike had England 4-0 up at the break.

Christoph Baumgartner headed in a consolation for Austria in the second-half before Nketiah added his second and England's fifth.

Former Watford coach Aidy Boothroyd, who is currently managing the U21s, made five substitutes during the match, but decided against giving Wilmot his second international appearance.
