Watford could soon be handed a boost to their squad as some key players return to training after spending some time out with injuries.

Will Hughes and Kiko Femenia are unlikely to feature this weekend, but head coach Nigel Pearson said the pair had returned to training and were nearing the stage when they may be available for squad selection.

“Will’s done some training, he’s been with us today,” said Pearson ahead of t heir game with Tottenham Hotspur. “It was just modified so he won’t be in contention for the weekend.

“Kiko has made really good progress, he’s trained with us to a certain extent today, but not for the entirety and I don’t foresee him being with us at the weekend.”

Another player nearing a return is Danny Welbeck, who has been absent since the away game with Spurs back in October. Elsewhere, Tom Cleverley could be set to return to training soon, while Sebastian Prodl and Daryl Janmaat are still further away.

“Danny Welbeck continues to train very well, but I think it’s important for him to get a base level of fitness,” said Pearson.

“It’s also important for us to make sure we don’t rush him back now. It’s great to have him in amongst the squad. Tom Cleverley is getting closer and will be out on the grass maybe tomorrow, probably next week as well. Those are good signs for us moving into what is going to be another busy period and an important part of the season.”
