Former Watford owner Laurence Bassini is interested in buying Oldham Athletic.

The Watford Observer’s sister paper The Oldham Times is reporting the controversial former Hornets owner is understood to have accompanied Latics owner Abdallah Lemsagam to a meeting with Boundary Park landlords Brassbank.

The two parties are at loggerheads over a £600,000 debt - relating to overdue rent and a loan - and are set for a court date in Manchester on Friday that could see the club go into administration.

Bassini tried to take over Bolton Wanderers last summer, going through the courts in an ultimately failed bid to take control at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Among many issues he saw his business plan for the League One club rejected by the EFL.

Bassini attended the Latics' game at Stevenage in January and was spotted in the directors' box.

The former Hornets owner took over at Vicarage Road in May 2011, but his controversial tenure ended 13 months later when he sold the club to the Pozzo family.

Bassini was subsequently banned from holding a position of authority with a Football League club for three years in March 2013 after a disciplinary commission found him guilty of financial misconduct during his time at the Watford helm.
