Juan Camilo Zuniga has reflected on his brief time with Watford, while he enjoys his retirement from the game.

The Colombian spent the 2016/17 season on loan with the Hornets, joining up with his friend and former boss from Napoli Walter Mazzarri.

After spending four of his seven seasons in Naples playing under Mazzarri and the Italian played a big part in bringing him to Vicarage Road.

“We all know the special bond between him and me," said Zuniga.

"He knew me for a long time and did his best to bring me to Watford, he insisted they sign me.

“I could have gone to Juventus a few years before but when I joined Watford all I wanted was to focus on the present and play well for them because nobody can go back and change the past.

“I am very grateful to the hierarchy of the club because they were great people and treated me very well."

Zuniga enjoyed his time in England and said it allowed him to rediscover his best form, after falling out of favour with Napoli.

The full-back said that playing in the Premier League helped to bring the best out of him.

“I really needed a breath of fresh air after all those years in Italy”, he said.

“I wasn’t playing much at Napoli and when the opportunity to come to England came my way it was an easy decision. All I wanted when I joined Watford was to become the ‘Zuniga of old’ and to play to my strengths again after some difficult years.

“Then of course I am not hiding that the chance to play in such an intense league like the Premier League was great.”

“I am very happy to have played for a lovely club like Watford. I played under a manager that I have known for many years and in a league like the Premier League."
