What are free bets and how do we use them?

Free bets are a very trendy type of bonus offered by the bookmaker. You can get them as a new customer and an existing one as well. These bets have significant potential, and you can win a lot if you know what you are doing. It's called a "free wager" or "free bet" because you don't stake your funds but a virtual token provided by the bookie. If you win, you will get all of your winnings in cash except for the free bet token because it will disappear after you place a bet with it. If you lose, you won't get the free bet back, but you won't lose any of your cash funds either. It's a win-win situation; however, you look at it.  Bookies usually give these types of bonuses to new customers for signing up to their platforms or to existing customers to prompt them to bet on a popular event for example.

Using free bets is as simple as it sounds. The process is almost the same with each bookmaker. Once you pick where you want to spend your free bets, you click on the odds to transfer the wager to the bet slip, and then you enter a stake amount. There should be a link or a button below the stake to let you choose if you want to spend your cash balance or your free bets. Some bookies remove the choice and only let you use your free wagers once the cash balance is spent or before that, depending on the bookie.  Keep in mind that you will have a specific timeframe to spend and rollover your free bets and winnings for all bonuses, but we will talk more about that below.

How to get free bet offers as a new and existing customer

If you are new to the bookmaker platform and don’t have an account yet, you will have to create one and, in the process, you will also get your free bets. Here is how you can register to any bookmaker platform and verify your account:

  1. Open the bookie website, mobile site, or mobile app and click on the link to create an account.
  2. Fill out your contact, personal, and account information, like names, date of birth, phone number, username, password, e-mail, address, etc.
  3. Choose how and if you want to be notified about new bonuses and promotions.
  4. Please enter the promo code related to the welcome bonus (unless you have to enter it during your first deposit, then skip this step).
  5. Accept the platform’s terms and conditions and verify that you are at least eighteen years old.
  6. Finish the registration and verify your e-mail address.
  7. Send copies or photos of documents proving your identity, age, and payment method to the bookie, like passport, driving license, utility bill, bank/card statement, council tax bill, etc.

If the bonus is related to your first deposit, you will have to make sure you do it via a method acceptable in the bonus terms and conditions.  Many bookies don't allow customers who use e-wallets such as Skrill and Neteller to participate in the welcome bonuses related to depositing.

If you are an existing customer, then getting the free bet happens almost always automatically, meaning they are credited to your account once you complete the qualifying conditions, whatever they might be. Sometimes, you will have to accept the free bets via a pop-up to use them.

Details regarding the terms and conditions of the free bet offers

Watford Observer:

All free bet offers come with unique terms and conditions you will have to follow to receive the free bets and to keep the winnings you get from them. We recommend that you make sure you always read the full conditions related to the bonus, so there are no surprises in the future. The most common conditions you will come across are:

  • Wagering requirements – you will most likely have to roll over the free bet winnings a certain amount of times before the bookmaker lets you withdraw from your cash or bonus balance. You would have to complete this process within a specific timeframe provided by the bookie, or else the free bets and the winnings from them would disappear.
  • Maximum winnings from free bets – in some situations, bookies max out the winnings you can receive from the free bets you get. This means that you won't be able to gain winnings from the free bets or the funds that came from them once you reach the maximum cap put there by the bookie.
  • You will be given a certain amount of time to accept and use your free bets, and there might even be regulations on the type of sport or event you can use them on depending on the kind of offer.
  • Some offers include a minimum odds requirement, which lets you place the free bets only on or above specific odds. The bookmaker might even put restrictions on the type of bets you can stake the free bets on (multiples, singles, etc.).
  • Suppose the offer is related to a deposit. In that case, specific methods might not be available, and you will most likely have to deposit a minimum amount or more to be eligible for the offer.

Types of free bet promotions offered by bookmakers

The types of free bets we can encounter are different, and each one has its terms and conditions you should read through carefully because they are unique to the kind of bonus.  Here are the variations of free wager bonuses available.

Free bet bonuses for new customers

  • No Deposit Free Bets – these bonuses require you to enter a specific promo code during your registration, and you get a free bet right after that without having to deposit anything.  They are rare but very trendy among customers.
  • Regular Free Bet Welcome Bonuses – standard free bets are given to customers upon settling their first qualifying wager, and you have a set of conditions to complete before you can withdraw.
  • Risk-Free Bonuses – these types of free wagers are only credited to you if your first qualifying wager loses, so if you win your first bet, you won't qualify for the bonus
  • Deposit Matches – they are given by bookies by matching your first deposit or your first wager, and you receive the bonus in either cash or free bets. They are top-rated bonuses and work by providing a 100% or 50% match in most cases.

Free wager bonuses for existing customers

  • Reload Bonuses – these bonuses are similar to matched deposit bonuses but are for existing customers. Once you deposit with a unique promo code, you get the bonus that was promised.
  • Loyalty Rewards – free bets often come from loyalty rewards. If the bookie has a loyalty program with progressive levels, you may win some free bets as you climb the loyalty ladder, and there are many more rewards you can receive.
  • Free Bets on Popular Events – bookmakers often give free bets to popularize sports events and bet on them.  These events can be the Premier League finals, for example, and you may get a free bet if you wanger on the event. The same goes for risk-free bets on popular sporting events.

Frequently asked questions regarding free bets

Watford Observer:

Can I withdraw my free bets?

No, you can’t. On every bookmaker platform out there, you will have to stake the free bets at least once, if not more, to be able to withdraw your winnings.

Can I use my free bet bonus on content outside of the Sportsbook?

No, you can't. Once you receive your free bets, you will be able to use them only on the bookmaker Sportsbook, and even then, some types of bets or markets might be excluded.

When do free bets expire and disappear from my account?

It's different for every bookmaker, but most of them only let free bets be active for seven days before they disappear from your account.

Is betting with free bets fun?

All betting is fun if you are lucky, and know what you are doing, of course.  Using free bets allows you to place bets without paying for the stake yourself, but winning or losing still depends on your betting strategy and luck.

Where can we find free bet offers?

The most obvious place is the internet; there are plenty of sites that advertise these betting offers from bookmakers in the UK. Another place is the bookie websites themselves, but you will have to go through each one, and it may take a lot of time, so we recommend that you go to the platform to read the T&Cs after you picked an offer you like.
