Watford head coach Vladimir Ivic has revealed he dropped captain Troy Deeney for the 2-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town due to "discipline issues".

The skipper had scored in his three previous matches, two of which had been winning goals, but found himself among the substitutes at the John Smith's stadium.

After a dismal performance in which a Ben Foster mistake and an Etienne Capoue own goal gifted the Terriers a first half lead, Ivic was asked why Deeney had played no part in the match.

While he would not go into any great details about the issues, he went on to say that no player should be considered above the team.

"First of all, he didn't start the game because he played the previous four game for 90 minutes," said Ivic. "And we know that he didn't work with the team and he came from the injury after a long period and I believe that he was not ready to play from the beginning.

"Why he didn't come from the bench, this is another question, because of some discipline issues."

Asked to elaborate further, he added: "This is between us, and I don't want to speak about some things to the media.

"I said from the first day, I'm here to do my best and to work to do what's best for the club, together with my players.

"Nobody, and no one can be above the club in my team when I'm coach. We need to think about the team and how we can improve the team and how we can give them what we need to get three points, day by day.

Watford Observer:

"This the philosophy. What I want to introduce. They know it I spoke with them a lot of times about that.

"About the discipline issue what happened, I don't want to speak in the media about that."
