Watford have had an initial loan bid for Matthew Longstaff rejected by Newcastle United, The Watford Observer understands.

The Hornets are chasing a deal for a midfielder today and have also enquired about the availability of Matthew's brother Sean from the same club, who is understood to want to stay at Newcastle.

The Magpies are reluctant to let any players depart for now, with their search for a midfielder understood to not have gone as well as they had hoped.

The Tyneside club are interested in signing Hamza Choudhury from Leicester City, Celtic's Olivier Ntcham and Arsenal's Joe Willock and the Longstaff move was only going to be given the green light should the they bring in one, or maybe even two, of those targets.

Things may change if Newcastle are able to bring someone in, but for now it's looking unlikely that Longstaff will come to Watford in this window.
