Troy Deeney is hoping to return to games to cheer from the touchline soon after picking up an injury during Watford's 0-0 draw with Coventry City that has ruled him out for at least two weeks.

The captain was involved in an initially innocuous-looking collision with an opponent, before playing on and finishing the match.

However, it later emerged that there was more of a problem as a result of the coming together, with a scan showing some achilles tendon damage, and the striker will now have his foot in an immobilising boot for the next fortnight.

While Deeney was on the bench for the 6-0 win against Bristol City at the weekend, he was never likely to play and did not take part in any of the substitutes' warm-ups.

Instead, the striker spent the game cheering on from the stands, something he will now not be able to do for a few matches while he carries out his rehabilitation.

"I'm not going to be around until I'm out of that boot, but as soon as I can get to the games I'll be doing what I would expect a captain to do; being as big a support as I can be to the gaffer and the lads," Deeney told the club website.

"I know it sounds mad when you think I was on the bench for the Bristol City game - but that's how much I've wanted to help do anything I can to help our club get right back in the hunt for automatic promotion.

"It's not unusual for me to get on with it sometimes; to have an injection and play with a little injury or two. Sometimes it's to my detriment longer term and sometimes it can look like I'm not giving it my all. But anyone who has any idea about me and Watford knows how much I want the best for everyone here.

Watford Observer:

"The specialist will probably want to stretch that fortnight longer, because he knows as soon as that boot's off I'll be charging through any work to get back."

In Deeney's absence, Watford have turned their form around, picking up a 6-0 win over Bristol before following up with a 1-0 win away at Preston North End on Tuesday night.

The striker has urged his teammates to continue with their hard work as they look to keep the pressure on the top two.

"The lads have done superb over the last week. Now we've got to keep that run going, keep churning out the results to put pressure on the other teams," he said.
