John Barnes has urged Watford to bring back Ashley Young this summer as they prepare for life in the Premier League.

The club legend believes that re-signing the full-back could have a positive effect on both the squad and supporters and could improve the relationship between the two.

Speaking to Betting Odds, Barnes said that it would be a "good signing".

“[He could be] similar to Troy Deeney, in terms of galvanising the squad and the club, and the fans could get a local hero back," he said. "Maybe not even to play every week. I do think that you need an identity and I think that if you look at most clubs they’re looking to have an identity from the relationship between the fans and the players.

"I think that Ashley will bring that back, so I think that it’d be a good signing for them.”

Talks continued last week between Young and the Hornets, with reports claiming he was ready to leave Inter this summer.
