Watford goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann made his international debut for Austria last night, as they were narrowly beaten 1-0 by England.

The shot-stopper had been called up to the senior national side on several occasions before but the closest he came to getting on the pitch was when he made the bench in a 3-1 win over the Faroe Islands back in March.

However, he was handed a starting place against England in the pre-Euro 2020 friendly at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium, increasing his chances of playing in the tournament this summer.

It was also a taste of what he can expect from next season in the Premier League as well, with the likes of Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold and Tottenham’s golden boot-winning striker Harry Kane testing him during the night.

Watford Observer:

While he managed to prevent both of those players from scoring, there was nothing he could do to prevent Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka from opening the scoring in the second half and giving England the win.

Nevertheless, Bachmann was still proud to have made his senior debut and said that it was made extra special by being in England.

After the match he tweeted: “Proud to make my debut for Austria last night! For it to be in England made it even more special!! Unlucky with the result but we keep going #euro2020.”

He could get his next international cap on Sunday when Austria host Slovakia in the Ernst-Happel-Stadion in Vienna before group stage games against North Macedonia, the Netherlands and Ukraine at this summer's tournament.
